A&P Group awarded Energy Gurus the contract in late September 2019 after an extensive competitive tender process against leading global marine companies for the design and replacement of the vessels entire diesel electric propulsion, dredging and automation plant.  Energy Gurus was contracted to deliver a complete turnkey package including engineering, procurement, installation & commissioning with full design approval by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for the below scope of works:

  • Main & Auxiliary Propulsion Variable Speed Drive – 2 x 1.5MW + 1 x 500kW
  • Dredging Pump Variable Speed Drive – 1 x 1.2MW
  • Flushing Pump Starter – Upgrade to Soft Starting (500kW)
  • Dredging Control System
  • Main Hydraulic Power Unit Remote Control System
  • Diesel Engine/Generator Control & Protection Systems
  • Diesel Engine Instrumentation & Sensors
  • Machinery Alarm & Monitoring System
  • Bridge Navigation & Dredging Control Consoles
  • Engine Control Room Consoles
  • 24 VDC Automation Battery and Power Distribution System

The design, engineering and procurement was carried out during the 4th quarter of 2019 followed by the construction, automation and  FAT  during the early part of 2020 at Energy Gurus’s HQ in Stockton-on-Tees. Installation and commissioning teams completed the site works at A&P’s Tees docks, Middlesbrough during March 2020 and April followed by successful trials in May 2020. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and with new safety at work restriction and procedures  implemented, Energy Gurus were able to complete the installation and commissioning onsite and remotely using the newly installed remote access network combined with the features included in the Energy Gurus marine & automation platform, MAP-OE™.

At the heart of the system is Energy Gurus’s proprietary Marine Automation Platform, MAP-OE™ for Integrated Machinery Automation & Control which also has the capability to provide PD Ports with ongoing remote conditioning monitoring reporting as well as diagnostics and troubling shooting for any alarms or site issue. The system is accessed via secure remote access network from Energy Gurus’s onshore hub significantly reducing the mean time to repair and the cost to repair by limiting the requirement for engineers to attend the vessel.

Paul Cairns, Managing Director comments: “The life extension project for the PD Ports Heortnesse dredging vessel  was delivered from companies based in the North East of England which further demonstrates the capability and capacity to deliver major marine, offshore and renewable projects from the UK. Designing and retrofitting complex marine systems on this scale and with this level of complexity requires many years of experience and lessons learned. With tight timescales and no margin for error, right first time is the only option. The successful delivery of this project, despite the challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic further illustrates Energy Gurus’s growing reputation as the partner of choice for demanding marine projects in the UK and Globally.”
