Major Automation & Electrical Upgrade – Car Carrier

In 2001, United European Car Carriers (UECC) contracted Energy Gurus to deliver a major automation and electrical system upgrade to ‘M/V Autocarrier’ at Germany’s Lloyd Werft Yard in Bremerhaven.

The project included:

  • Replacement of the existing obsolete 20 year old Machinery Monitoring & Alarm System with a client specified and supplied Scana Moland MA100 system. This comprised two operator workstations, data processing nodes, cabin alarm system (for UMS operation) and PLC pump control system for remote operation, standby start and re-start after blackout.
  • Replacement of all of the original and oboslete Air Circuit Breakers with Terasaki AT Series devices, complete with microprocessor overcurrent protection units.
  • Replacement of the original generator control and safety systems which were obsolete with the latest class approved marine generator control, monitoring and safety systems.
  • Renewal of main engine safety system. An Energy Gurus Controls designed PLC based system was installed, providing enhanced engine protection. Features included automatic load reduction, safety shutdown, emergency stop, start blocking, input sensor and shutdown solenoid wire break detection.
  • Conversion of main switchboard from manual to fully automatic operation including installation of an Energy Gurus Controls designed Power Management System. This provided features such as autosynchronisation, load sharing, load transfer, load dependent starting and blackout power restoration.
