Energy Gurus Delivers ‘Worlds First’ electrically driven winch drive train based on ABB Synchronous Reluctance Motors for 12Te Active Heave Compensated (AHC) LARS Winch

Working closely with our Client, a leading OEM for Launch & Recovery Systems and working to an ambitious design brief, Energy Gurus delivered a turnkey design, supply, installation and commissioning package for a complete winch electrical drive train system and controls package to DNV.GL rules. A key feature of the design was a winch mounted forced air naturally cooled VSD system, ideal for portable deck mounted systems that exceeded our Client’s expectations in terms of cost, size, weight and performance.

With Energy Gurus’s expertise in marine solutions & standards, knowledge of new technologies applicable to the marine and offshore industry and highly skilled personnel, Energy Gurus was able to successfully deploy ABBs award winning Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) industrial motor technology, marinised for open deck installation. The SynRM motors offered significant benefits over other technologies, with smaller frame size and significant weight and inertia reduction compared with equivalent induction motors, whilst offering the same quality and robustness as the ABB process and performance motors. In fact the dynamic performance and torque delivery was so impressive that Energy Gurus Senior Software & Drives System Engineer Luis Guillan commented that “the ABB SynRM motor is the closest machine I’ve ever worked with that approaches the performance of a permanent magnet motor without out being a permanent magnet motor and without the cost!”. At around the same cost as a standard induction motor and coupled to the marine approved ABB ACS880 DTC (Direct Torque Control) drive platform and ABB active harmonic filter, the advanced drive train system offers the back deck machinery industry an unparalleled electrically driven package suitable for both portable and fixed solutions.

With an electrical energy storage option also available, regenerated energy can be captured and released, removing the need for wasteful dynamic braking resistors and vastly reducing the energy consumed. Not to mention enhanced supply loss ride through and safety.

Energy Gurus continues to be at the forefront of technology and solutions for the marine and offshore industry giving our Clients the competitive edge in their respective markets.
